M4 Lab

 

This layout was made for educational purposes to learn how to identify features through only descriptions of reflectance properties. I was given criteria for each type of feature to find, such as spikes in pixel values. The first feature (top left) is a very large river or lake of some kind. It was the largest spike on the histogram as well as the furthest left, meaning that it was very large and dark! The second feature (bottom left) is a snowy mountain top. This type of feature has large contrasts in brightness and size depending on what layer is being viewed. The third feature (bottom right) is of a water sandbar area that has large spikes in brightness all the sudden. This is because water is typically very dark, but having a large amount of sand right under the water will quickly cause it to change brightness.

M1 Lab: Visual Interpretation

  This map layout was created to assist in learning how to identify areas/objects from an image based on traits, such as shape, size, shadows, patterns, and associations. I took an old image from Pensacola Beach and found various features based on these different traits. For example, I chose the pier for shape, as it was very distinct. I chose the ocean for pattern because the ripples of the water was how i could tell what it was. I chose the water tower for shadows because the shadow is the only way I could distinguish it. I chose the beach sand for association because it would be hard to tell what it is without being next to the ocean. The categories of traits are color coordinated to easily tell what traits I used to choose the objects in the image. This was a new skill for me, so it took me some time to get used to doing it.

Module 3 Map Sharing and Projections

  This assignment made a lot of sense for me. Being able to create the domains of the map that I was going to be collecting on made it very simple to set things up in a way that made sense in the field. I thought that the different ways that we learned to share a map like this (like the KML file) were simple and got the job done without any hiccups. The only thing that I got majorly confused about was that I had to log back into to ArcGIS pro to see my points after I had collected them. It took me a while to figure out why mine was not working. I also liked learning how to share a map on google earth because many people do not have accessibility to Arc that I work with, but it it easy to tell someone how to go on google earth. This lab brought a lot of things together for me that I have seen the GIS manager that I work with do, but had not learned to do myself.
