About Me

  My name is Reese and I am in my fourth set of courses in this GIS program at UWF. I work full time as an Environmental Specialist for a local municipality, which is what my story map is all about ( https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/4cf090796d3f4682a018a53db55ee664

Links to an external site.). I have helped with lots of GIS projects in my environmental career, and taken one GIS course in my Environmental Science bachelors degree before I started this program. I absolutely love geography, history, and maps in general. Because I have done so much GIS work in the environmental and natural resource field already, I decided that I wanted to become even more skilled in this realm, which is why I joined the GIS program here. My goal in going through this program is to be as valuable to my city in environmental and geographic information science as possible. I also want to be the person who is looked to when any complex questions could be answered through GIS. 

 I think this love for geography originally stemmed from my love of nature. I would look at parts of the globe on Google Maps when I was in High School and wonder what their natural landscape looked like, and run with that curiosity to look things up on Youtube about the area. I really think my interests tie together to an extent that I may not love any separate pieces as much without the others involvement. To speak more on this, I also love kayak fishing, surfing, music, visual art, and clothing style. All of these things closely relate to my interests in geography, history, and nature. With all that being said, I am excited for every piece of GIS knowledge and skill I can learn, and to work with you all to make it a great semester!

M1 Lab: Visual Interpretation

  This map layout was created to assist in learning how to identify areas/objects from an image based on traits, such as shape, size, shadows, patterns, and associations. I took an old image from Pensacola Beach and found various features based on these different traits. For example, I chose the pier for shape, as it was very distinct. I chose the ocean for pattern because the ripples of the water was how i could tell what it was. I chose the water tower for shadows because the shadow is the only way I could distinguish it. I chose the beach sand for association because it would be hard to tell what it is without being next to the ocean. The categories of traits are color coordinated to easily tell what traits I used to choose the objects in the image. This was a new skill for me, so it took me some time to get used to doing it.

Module 3 Map Sharing and Projections

  This assignment made a lot of sense for me. Being able to create the domains of the map that I was going to be collecting on made it very simple to set things up in a way that made sense in the field. I thought that the different ways that we learned to share a map like this (like the KML file) were simple and got the job done without any hiccups. The only thing that I got majorly confused about was that I had to log back into to ArcGIS pro to see my points after I had collected them. It took me a while to figure out why mine was not working. I also liked learning how to share a map on google earth because many people do not have accessibility to Arc that I work with, but it it easy to tell someone how to go on google earth. This lab brought a lot of things together for me that I have seen the GIS manager that I work with do, but had not learned to do myself.
